ESR Tubes / 4NC Sodium Citrate Blood Collection Tubes

ESR tube is filled with 3.8% sodium citrate. The ratio for liquid sodium citrate to blood is 1:4. The tubes are designed for ESR determination without the use of sedimentation pipettes. After one hour or two hours the results are read. It belongs to whole blood specimen tube.

Features

  • How it works: Westergren method is used to test erythrocyte sedimentation rate.
  • Additive filling: The sodium citrate is filled by precise peristaltic pump dosing system.
  • The PET ESR tube is packed with aluminum bag to keep the product stable.
  • Operation notice: invert the tube 6-8 times immediately after blood collection to prevent blood clotting.

Application

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) indirectly reflects the presence of inflammation in the body by measuring the rate at which red blood cells settle, such as:

  • Auxiliary diagnosis: It helps doctors to identify potential inflammation, infections, autoimmune diseases, or tumors in the body.
  • Disease monitoring: This test is usually to be used to monitor disease activity and treatment efficacy in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and polymyalgia rheumatica. If treatment is effective, the ESR value will decrease accordingly.
  • Differential diagnosis: In cases of suspected specific diseases such as giant cell arteritis, the ESR is one of the key diagnostic indicators.

Why this product is chosen?

The function of this tube is the same as ESR analyzer tube. The correction option is based on whether the laboratory uses a fully automated ESR analyzer or a manual method. If the traditional manual Westphal method, this tube is preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

A: Normal ESR values vary by age and sex:

  • Men under 50: 0–15 mm/hr
  • Women under 50: 0–20 mm/hr Values may be slightly higher in older adults

A:The ESR test evaluates the rate at which red blood cells (erythrocytes) fall in a vertical tube over one hour, reported in millimeters per hour. In healthy person, red blood cells settle slowly. When inflammation is present, proteins such as fibrinogen cause red blood cells to clump together into stacks called rouleaux, which sink faster, producing a higher ESR reading.

  • High ESR: Suggests inflammation, which could be due to infection, autoimmune disease, cancer, or other inflammatory conditions.
  • Low ESR: Usually not a concern but can be influenced by conditions like polycythemia or high red blood cell counts.ESR is best viewed as a screening tool or “smoke alarm” for inflammation-it signals the need for further investigation rather than providing a definitive diagnosis.
